Hammond upset Marriotts Ridge on Friday in one of the biggest surprises of the season.
The Golden Bears won 5-2 on the road to record ther fifth win of the season.
Hammond entered with a 4-7 record, sitting multiple wins below the Mustangs’ 7-3 start to the year.
Momentum entering the game marked the biggest differences between the two teams. Marriotts Ridge won its prior three games and scored at least 15 runs in all of them. They had 55 total runs scored in that span.
Hammond looked to rebound after an 8-6 loss to Mt. Hebron on Wednesday. The Golden Bears were 2-2 in their past four games.
Expectations for the game immediately flipped on their head in the first inning.
Hammond erupted for a four run opening inning. They had three straight hits for an early ambush, providing the lead they would take and never look back from.
Braeden Garris started that rally with a single to right field. Peter Yarnell doubled to left field to add more pressure with two runners in scoring position. Collin Stryker took over with an RBI single to left, driving in Garris as the first run of the game.
Three errors let the Golden Bears blow the game open early. They held a 4-0 lead before Marriotts Ridge could even step up to the plate.
Stryker emerged early as the MVP of the game. The two-way player provided his own run support and dominated on the mound. The red hot Marriotts Ridge offense had few answers in their first time through the order.
Stryker threw five scoreless innings and limited hard contact throughout the game. He provided more of his own run support in the fifth with an RBI double. Hammond had a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.
The Mustangs mounted their best rally of the game in the sixth. They used two walks and a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Alec Schweneman got the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single.
John Ketterer got picked off in a key play at third by Hammond’s third baseman Yarnell Rivera and catcher Lucas Tordella. The Mustangs still managed to reload the bases with a single from Michael Delmonte.
Stryker, facing the most pressure he had dealt with all game, coaxed a swinging strikeout from Jason Devito on four pitches to end the threat.
His big stop carried over. In the 7th inning, Stryker picked up another strikeout and worked around a double to seal the win.
Stryker went the distance in the win, pitching seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. He issued four walks and recorded four strikeouts.
Marriotts Ridge fell to 7-4 on the season. They will play two games this week against Glenelg and Reservoir.
Hammond will look to continue its hot streak this week. The 5-7 Golden Bears take on Westminster, Wilde Lake and South Carroll, facing the Wildecats for a rematch after winning 23-10 on Apr. 8.

Girls’ Lacrosse 🥍
Wilde Lake has shown improvement recently despite a challenging path. The team set a season high in goals last week with a chance for its first win of the year.
The Wildecats travel to Atholton, who have not recorded a home win all season.
The winner of this game would gain significant momentum for their programs in this season and for the future.
