Previewing HoCo Lacrosse County Championships
County lacrosse has come down to one field, one date and two teams.
Glenelg and Marriotts Ridge recorded the highest winning percentages in their respective conferences, bringing a doubleheader for the county titles.
This latest doubleheader comes just a few weeks after Marriotts Ridge’s lacrosse teams hosted Glenelg on April 23.
Recent Rematch
9-3 Marriotts Ridge girls’ lacrosse posted one of the most impressive regular seasons in recent memory.
The Mustangs scored double-digit goals in each of their wins and only allowed double digits twice. They finished with a +87 point differential.
A 0-2 start to the season did not dampen any of the team’s promise entering the year. They won their next eight games without allowing more than seven points once. Only one team proved capable of stopping Marriotts Ridge.
Glenelg girls’ lacrosse spent most of the season competing against out-of-county teams instead of typical rivals. The Gladiators only faced six county teams, including Marriotts Ridge on April 23.
The first matchup between the two teams ended as a one-sided affair. Playing at Marriotts Ridge, the Gladiators controlled the game en route to a 14-6 win. The Mustangs recorded a season low in scoring and a season high in goals allowed.
No county rival could take down the Gladiators for the sixth consecutive season. Glenelg has now won its last 55 games in the county, dating back to the 2018-2019 school year. Their last loss came against Marriotts Ridge in a 10-9 game on May 13, 2019. The Mustangs will need to rediscover that magic to pull off the upset.

Glenelg boys’ lacrosse is the hottest team in the county.
The Gladiators are winners of their last 12 games, dating back to a 16-6 season-opening loss to Severna Park. Since that game, Glenelg allowed double-digit goals once and scored at least nine goals in each game of the streak.
Marriotts Ridge enjoyed another strong campaign with a strong start and finish. The team’s 25-0 win over Long Reach stood out as a statement of the power the Mustangs can bring offensively and defensively.
Consistency is the only area where Marriotts Ridge did not excel. A 3-1 start turned into a 2-4 midseason stretch, but later a bounceback with a two-game winning streak to close the season.
The Mustangs’ only county loss came to Glenelg in an 11-9 game. That two-goal margin was the slimmest for any Glenelg game, showing that Marriotts Ridge was the hardest county rival to beat.
The girls’ lacrosse championship will start at 4:00 today. The boys’ championship will directly follow with an expected start time of 5:30.
