NEW POLICY

Howard County Times reports: A policy change offers increased opportunity to participate in extracurriculars for students who are struggling academically.

Howard County Public Schools recently revised Policy 9070 so that high school students must now maintain at least a 2.0 GPA—with no more than two failing grades per marking period—to stay eligible for extracurriculars and athletics, though incoming freshmen are automatically eligible for fall activities. The update, effective July 1, 2025, also allows students to regain eligibility through approved summer school, and includes waiver provisions for those with IEPs or 504 plans whose academic challenges stem from educational accommodations not being met.
