Glenelg Softball reaches 12 wins after a late-game rally

Glenelg clawed its way back to reach 12 wins on the season.
The Gladiators hosted the Centennial Eagles on Thursday, with both teams pushing to move up in the standings.
The two rivals faced off for the first time at Glenelg since Mar. 31, 2025. The Eagles won that game 3-2, giving the Gladiators their first one-run loss since 2022.
Glenelg entrusted freshman Quinn Spencer with the ball for such a pivotal game. She took the mound just two days after recording the win with five innings of three-run ball against Howard.
The Eagles' lineup attacked Spencer early in the game with chaos on the basepaths.
Bella Leider opened the game with a leadoff double on the first pitch she saw. A Katelyn Parbuoni ground ball to shortstop, which prompted Glenelg to try and get the out at third instead of first, put runners on the corners with no one out for the heart of the Centennial order.
The Eagles attempted a double steal and successfully recorded both swipes, scoring the first run of the game. Spencer got the first out of the inning with a lineout, but another single kept the pressure on, placing two runners in scoring position.
Centennial’s early hustle continued with a bunt single from Sophia Reichard, driving in another run. Layla Schroyer raced home on a passed ball and the Eagles ended their first inning with a three-run eruption.
Spencer had never allowed multiple runs in the first inning before facing Centennial. She now has a 4.45 RA/7 in 11 opening innings, standing higher than her 3.64 RA/7 in the rest.
Glenelg helped to pick up its starter with a three-hit rally in the bottom of the first. Audrey Riley drove in Matte Duignan after she and Katie Ross both reached safely. Centennial starter Lauren Jensen limited the damage with two weak pop-ups to end the first inning.
Bumpy starts did not sink either of Spencer's or Jensen’s outings. The game turned into a pitcher’s duel for the next two innings before Glenelg kept chipping away. Spencer retired six of the seven batters she faced and Jensen stranded runners on the corners in a scoreless third inning.
The bottom of the order came through in the fourth inning for the Gladiators. Kenzie Robinson picked up her first hit of the game and quickly exited for pinch runner Lillian Houston. Katelyn Lindberg smoked a ground ball to left field to set up the best rally for Glenelg since the first inning.
Spencer provided her own run support with another single to right field, driving in Houston. Glenelg had the tying run on third base and put the go-ahead run in scoring position with the speed of pinch runner Nibert.
Duignan stepped up to the plate as the ideal hitter for Glenelg with the game on the line. Jensen had allowed a hit and a flyball in the first two plate appearances, setting up a potential third time through the order penalty.
A laboring Jensen needed to fill up the zone to try and preserve Centennial’s lead. The first pitch dropped in for a called strike, unlike either of their prior two matchups. Duignan cashed in on the next pitch, drilling a bases-clearing double to left field.
The hit continued a recent power binge for the second baseman with five extra-base hits in Glenelg’s last five games.
Spencer took the offense’s momentum and translated it to the mound. She authored a complete flip from the rocky first inning to retire the last 18 hitters she faced. The only Centennial baserunner in the game’s final six innings came from a leadoff hit by pitch in the second inning.
12-2 Glenelg’s final homestand continues this week with games against 13-0 Mt. Hebron, 6-5 Long Reach and 6-7 Westminster. Their season-ending push could shake up the standings for possession of the county’s best record.
